Michal Truelsen’s show of new works, “Earth Stories”, at the Loading Dock Gallery for the month of February, presents a rich, shimmery look at the world we live in. Truelsen says the show springs from her interest in geology and mapping, “and in the human experience of living on this physical earth.” The show features a series of paper bas reliefs celebrating the course of the Merrimack River from Franklin, New Hampshire to the sea at Newburyport. Many of the works reflect the terrain around Lowell, showing the eons-long story of the planet in a new way. Truelsen helps us look at the river and the land it flows through independent of the cities, roads, and other structures that appear on conventional maps. Truelsen works in mixed media, drawing, and printmaking. “Much of the work for this show is what I call ‘paper bas relief’,” she says. She cuts paper in organic shapes and glues the shapes together to build up intricate layers and surfaces that reward a visual exploration (it’s very tempting, but please: don’t touch!). A Lowell resident, Truelsen grew up in Vermont and lived in New Hampshire for many years. She has a home studio for quiet, focused work; and a studio at Western Avenue for the stimulus of the “shared, lively environment” of the community of artists there. She says she makes art because there is no better way for her “to think about the really important stuff. For me, it’s a way of talking about, asking about, thinking about the essentials, the intangible parts of what we are.” Truelsen studied printmaking at the DeCordova Museum, and has been creating works on, and of, paper for more than twenty years. Earth Stories shows in the Loading Dock Gallery at Western Avenue Studios, 122 Western Avenue, second floor of the A-Mill, from February 1 to 26, 2012. There will be a reception for the artist on Friday, February 3, from 6 to 9 pm. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 11 am to 4:30 pm.

Tickets Free

Talk to the Animals — Sadie

Today we’re here to introduce Sadie a stunning 4 year old Rottweiler. Sadie was transferred to us back in November, from an overcrowded shelter in Indiana. She has been with us over two months and had been with the shelter in Indiana quite a while as well. W
Being in a kennel has been very stressful for her which is why this special girl really needs to find a home soon because once she is out of her kennel, she is great on leash and is all about making her handler happy! As a recent graduate of our Shelter Stars program Sadie knows all of her basic commands and can’t wait to show you!
Sadie is a typical Rottie – she’s not hyper, but needs an adequate amount of activity. She is not recommended with children under the age of 13, and she has been good with some dogs she has met here, but should probably be in a home without cats.
Like all of our dogs, cats and bunnies, Sadie is spayed, micro-chipped and up to date on all of her shots. Come in to meet this pretty girl for yourself.
We’d also like to invite you to come and “Freeze Your Tail Off” for the Animals! The New Hampshire SPCA is proud to announce our 2nd Annual Doggy Paddle Plunge, which will take place on St. Patrick’s Day, Saturday, March 17th,! To register for the Plunge, or for more information on this and other events, and to see more of our adoptable animals, please visit our website at nhspca.org.

Talk to the Animals — Valentine Special

At just ten months old, Angel is a very sweet bunny as well as a staff favorite! She is here because her owners were moving and the landlord of their new home didn’t allow any kind of pets.

Angel

Angel is very happy to be held and cuddled. She would love to sit in your lap as long as you’d like. She enjoys being out of her cage, and has gotten a bit sick of the one she’s been in here, having been with us since mid-October. At first glance, Angel looks a bit like she has a double chin, but what appears to be a little overweight is actually a dulap pouch. The Dulap pouch is a naturally developing pouch in an unsprayed female bunny that would be used to create a nest for newborn bunnies. Now that Angel has been spayed, that pouch will go away over time.

Angel is an indoor bunny only and the ideal home would plan to allow her out of her cage at least four hours a day. So, while you’re relaxing and watching tv or reading book, she’d be happy to keep you company on the couch!

When people think of adopting an animal, they often forget that we have more than just cats and dogs. Bunnies are actually our third most adopted animal in a typical year. We also offer a second chance to small animals such as birds, turtles and guinea pigs and larger farm animals such as horses and goats.

We welcome you to stop in and visit all of our furry friends. For our hours, information on how to donate, and profiles of many of our animals up for adoption, please visit our website @ nhspca.org or follow us on facebook and twitter.

Talk to the Animals — Chihuahua Ginger

Hi everyone! This week’s available pet is Ginger!

Ginger-- a California gal

She is oh so adorable with a tan coat, white chest and those big brown Chihuahua eyes.
We think that Ginger is about three years old, but since she was a stray, we can’t be positive. She was recently transferred to us along with about 11 other Chihuahua mix dogs from an extremely overcrowded shelter in Los Angeles.
California is in the midst of a truly tragic situation where Chihuahua’s are so overpopulated that many are euthanized every day. A group called Project Flying Chihuahua is working to transport as many of them as possible to other parts of the country where they are scarce and can find wonderful homes.
Despite her long flight and the shock of the New Hampshire cold, Ginger seems to have adjusted quite well. She is friendly and sweet. She is currently in with a few other pups and is doing nicely.
Like all of our cats and dogs Ginger is already spayed, micro-chipped and up to date on all of her shots. Come in and meet this adorable girl for yourself.
For more information on available pets, events, classes and to view our wish-list, visit our website at nhspca.org.
